Medical Director, High Risk Obstetrics and Gynecology Quality Program

I am an obstetrician and gynecologist at Memorial Healthcare System and the Medical Director of Memorial’s OB/GYN High-Risk Quality Program. I care for patients with benign and high-risk pregnancies and those in need of gynecological surgeries.

When caring for women with high-risk pregnancies, my team and I are often treating diseases that affect all organ systems in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. We commonly care for mothers with diabetes, lupus, preeclampsia, mothers with babies with cardiac anomalies, endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory diseases, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding as well as other concerns. We also work closely with Memorial's Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists coordinating, collaborating and executing a care plan to deliver the best care for the mother and her unborn child.

I became interested in a career in medicine at a young age. Growing up in Jamaica, I witnessed and understood the disparities in healthcare. My father succumbed to his health due to a lack of access to and availability of basic resources. These early experiences allow me to see a disease process with a multifocal lens that includes the lens of the patient experience. It has helped me to empathize and better understand my patients. What they are experiencing emotionally and physically around a disease process is important to me. “Doctoring” involves competency in treating a medical condition but is elevated with empathy.

When working with patients and their families, I am both pragmatic and compassionate. Communication is important to me because it helps ensure patients’ expectations are respected, understood and achieved to promote strong patient satisfaction. I use facts and data to drive the conversation around the disease process, which allows patients to understand the rationale for treatment recommendations. I then interject a patient’s perspective, which may influence a treatment outcome but the combination of both facts and perspectives provides effective communication for the path taken towards care and recovery. This approach I find maximizes the care experience.

I am also passionate about improving communication and quality healthcare outcomes in women’s health. As maternal mortality and morbidity rates increase in the United States, these efforts are even more important. I am interested in identifying real problems that impact quality care and developing effective and reliable solutions which mitigate the problems identified resulting in improved quality outcomes. I am also the Memorial Regional physician champion for the Postpartum Access and Continuity of Care initiative by the Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative.
