Brain Tumor Removed Order Restored for Kathy

For Kathy, what started as fatigue progressed to trouble with words and failing to recognize her grandson Connor at his ballgame.

“I thought she was having a stroke,” said Bob, Kathy’s husband. “When we got to the hospital, they took her right away.”

It wasn’t a stroke, but rather a benign brain tumor, the size of an orange, called a sphenoid wing meningioma.

The next morning, they met Simon Buttrick, MD, neurosurgeon at Memorial Neuroscience Institute, who would perform Kathy’s surgery. “Her tumor was very large, on the left side of her brain, which controls vital functions like memory and language,” said Dr. Buttrick. “It explained a lot of her symptoms.”

The tumor was removed relatively easily via a craniotomy due to its soft consistency and the fact that it wasn’t stuck to any big blood vessels or brain structures.

Just a few days later, Kathy was feeling better. When all her grandkids came to visit, Connor said, “Oh, Mimi’s back!”
